Aethon Announces Billings Clinic as Newest MedEx Customer

PITTSBURGH – Aethon is announcing that Billings Clinic has selected Aethon’s MedEx suite of products to help improve their inpatient pharmacy operations. MedEx provides hospital pharmacies chain-of-custody traceability and control of medications delivered from the pharmacy to nursing units.

Hospital pharmacies have a variety of distribution methods that include decentralized cabinets, medication rooms, pneumatic tube systems and even hand delivery by pharmacy couriers. Medications delivered from the pharmacy to the nursing unit by pneumatic tube systems and couriers are commonly misplaced or go missing which leads to expensive rework, inventory waste and compliance issues. MedEx TubeSafe and MedSafe modules close this gap through a unique combination of hardware and software components.

“We chose MedEx because it was the only solution that would provide reliable chain-of-custody delivery of our wide variety of centrally distributed medications, and in particular those delivered through our pneumatic tube system. Our ability to serve the nursing staff and patients will be greatly improved since this solution will improve the medication distribution process and decrease re-work by staff,” says Kyle Townsend, Director of Pharmacy Services, Billings Clinic. “With MedEx, both the pharmacy and nursing staff will be able to track delivery in real time and this will eliminate phone calls and inquiries about missing medication(s). The secured tube canister is a great feature and ensures the nurse on the correct unit receives the medications and it doesn’t require a pricey upgrade of our pneumatic tube system.”

MedEx will also integrate with other pharmacy systems already in use by Billings Clinic. All medication tracking information will be available directly within their Cerner health information system. This will allow nursing to directly access real-time tracking information without logging into a different system. In addition, IV doses prepared through DoseEdge will be tracked from preparation to delivery, all on the MedEx platform. This will allow pharmacies to monitor and improve their turnaround time of sensitive IV medications.
